The topic of e-cigarettes is of constant debates. E-cigarettes are marketed as a new alternative to conventional cigarettes. Let’s start to find are e-cigarettes safer or is it just marketing strategies to increase the craze of e-cigarettes among the pupil by just giving a safer tagline to it. Are e-cigarettes going to decline the habit of smoking?
What are e-cigarettes?
E-cigarettes are operated by batteries which provide a way to get the nicotine. Nicotine is found in tobacco which is an addictive drug. By smoking cigarettes, people take in nicotine by inhaling it. E-cigarettes also allow nicotine to inhale by heating a liquid cartridge which contains nicotine, flavors and other chemicals into vapors.
Are e-cigarettes safe or equally harmful as compared to conventional cigarettes?
“Smoking is injurious to health” this quote shows that whether e-cigarettes or conventional cigarettes both are harmful to our health. So, there is no question of debate but we need to look at its bad effects in our body.
The main difference between e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes is that e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco. E-cigarettes contain many chemicals which are found in conventional cigarettes. It also contains toxic chemicals which are also found in conventional cigarettes. Many studies have been carried out which shows contradictory results in which some said it reduces mortality rate or reduce the rate of smoking while others said it doubles the risk of smoking.
E-cigarettes contain a toxic compound found in antifreeze which causes cancer in human beings. It also contains formaldehyde chemical which also causes cancer. Conventional cigarettes cause chronic diseases like bronchitis, emphysema and heart diseases. E-cigarettes also contain toxic chemicals so it cannot be said that they will reduce the risk of diseases.
The cells exposed to the vapors of the e-cigarettes suffer several damages like DNA strand breaks. DNA has double helix structure and contains intertwined two long structures of molecules. When one of these strands break apart which lead to cancer. The affected cell will lead to cell death.
There are two types of e-cigarettes- nicotine and nicotine free. Nicotine makes smoking addictive and it can also lead to damage cells. Nicotine free cigarettes cause more 50 percent more DNA breaks. So, both e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes are harmful. The best smoker can do is to quit smoking. So, are cigarettes safe than the conventional cigarettes, from above discussions answer is definitely no. Both are harmful to our health.
